Crib to Legos: A boys room over the years

Just as children change, rooms change. This boys room has transformed over the last six years and is just about to be outgrown now. Want to see the road it travelled?

This room started out as a long storage room. The chair in the corner is the return from our upstairs couch which we aren’t using currently as a corner couch.

The painting is by me, also made the sad rain cloud mobile since I knew we would be living in in the Pacific Northwest. The artwork below is a picture from the book I made with a friend (she painted it!) and the shisa print is from Okinawa.

Rug

We purchased this white rug in Okinawa Japan, which has a shockingly horrible rug selection. Finding a white square shag there was good enough fortune, and instead of buying a new rug when we retuned back to the U.S. I decided to reuse this one and just sharpie on it. It worked well enough and even 6 years later it is still holding up at some level.

When we found out we were having a third child, we decided to add a wall to this long skinny room and make two tiny rooms. Many people would have combined kids, but since I am a babywise mom and scheduling and naps were crucial - small spaces were better to me than shared big ones. We added the wall on top of the carpet so it could be easily removed, it was filled with insulation and instead of drywall I added panelling which is easier to cut and cheaper. Originally, I had planned on painting this, but I loved both of the patterns, and sometimes when you’re pregnant, and in the middle of the kitchen remodel, you choose easy. This is not as sound proof as a regular wall, but it does the trick. Click here to see my daughters room on the other side.

When my son outgrew his crib, we swapped it for a toddler bed, and later, as he joined the lego obsession, I built this desk for him using two square storage cubes, and one smaller one and adding a wood board between them. I added a small lip to the back to prevent legos falling behind.
