This playroom is located on the lower level, or the walkout basement, of the house. When we moved in, a full wall was fireplace and the other walls windows onto the beautiful view as well as a walk out to the lake.
As nice as it would be to have a whole wall of fireplace, it left no room for storage. Just like our living room, this fireplace had two off-centered shelves. Within a few moments of mentioning we should remove them, my husband took them out. The hearth began almost the same way, with an idea that moved into action very quickly.
After removing the stone, a mason helped us finish the corners with clean edges and we added a hearth cap. And per usual, there are few problems a ton of coats of white paint can’t solve and this wall of brick was no different. The hard work paid off with a much brighter feel and set the stage for our next steps.
Built Ins
We had to tackle the lack of storage in this room, and once the paint was complete, we were primed and ready for a classic Ikea hack, the classic Ikea Billy Bookcase Built Ins. After putting them together and adding doors to the lower half, they were secured to the wall and trimmed it out with molding to fill in the gaps and give more of a built in look. If you can imagine, there are even more toys and books within!
Lighting
Eventually we replaced what we like to call “boob lights” with flat l.e.d.s which is a much easier solution than putting in can lighting.
